Every year, the AYD Youth Development Day has been an avenue for students to interact with resource persons and discuss self-improvement, academic excellence and choice of career. This year wasn’t an exception as we had a talk show, personal assessment and career development session, spelling bee, and other value adding activities.
In the past five years that the event has held, it has played host to different young leaders from various Government Secondary Schools in Ibadan. This year we had schools like, Anglican Grammar School, Baptist Secondary School, Ibadan Grammar School, Olubi Memorial Grammar School, St. Anne’s School, St. David’s School, and Yejide Girls Grammar School in attendance.
A personality assessment test was carried out to enable the students discover their personality types, help them understand how unique they were, and to guide them in making career choices. Most times we need moments of self introspection to keep us on the right path.
During the talk show, participants asked various questions centred around academics, career and personal struggles. We had experienced adults, volunteers and teachers who shared useful insights that the students could glean from to make better informed choices.
The highlight of the Youth Development Day 2019 was a spelling bee of three rounds. Ohagwu Favour of Ibadan Grammar school emerged as the winner out of 63 candidates who participated. Umair Esther of Baptist Secondary School and Omiwole Ifeoluwa of Ibadan Grammar School came second and third respectively. The level of intelligence displayed by these students was top notch. We’re indeed proud of them all.
